Preparing for a complete blood count is easier than most people arrive expecting, though what you do beforehand does show up in how smooth the visit is and how accurate the numbers come back. We run patients across Delhi NCR through this daily at UniQ Pathlab, and it is the same three questions every time. Do I need to fast. Can I take my medicines. Will dehydration move my numbers. All three get answered below, so you turn up prepared and leave with a report worth something.
What a complete blood count looks at is the cells themselves, red and white and the platelets, and then the indices sitting behind them, haemoglobin, MCH, PCV. Every one of those values answers to something. Hydration. A meal eaten recently. Exercise, medication. Which is the whole reason preparation matters, because otherwise what you get on paper is the day you had rather than the baseline you actually run at.
The test screens for several concerns at once:
This one we get asked more than anything else. For a complete blood count taken on its own, fasting is not required. Eat and drink as you would on any other morning.
It starts mattering the moment your CBC has been bundled with something else:
Where your doctor has ordered a package rather than a lone CBC, assume you are fasting until somebody tells you otherwise, and put the question to our lab at the point you book.
Two or three sensible habits, and both your comfort and the accuracy of the report improve on them.
Stay Hydrated
Water as normal, the day before, and again on the morning itself. Dehydration concentrates the blood, and blood drawn concentrated pushes haemoglobin and PCV, the hematocrit, upward, so the report overstates you. Something else follows from it as well. A hydrated vein is a findable vein, and the draw is over quicker for everybody.
Avoid Strenuous Exercise
Train hard shortly before a draw and some of your counts will shift on the strength of it, temporarily. Where you can, leave the heavy session out the night before, and on the morning itself.
Note Your Medications
Plenty of medicines move blood values about, and supplements do too. Iron acts on the red-cell indices, MCH among them, while certain drugs will alter white-cell or platelet counts. What you must not do is stop anything prescribed off your own bat. Tell the technician what you are on. It gets noted against the report and read in that light.
Quick, and about as routine as anything we do. The U.S. National Library of Medicine puts the CBC down as low-risk, needing no more than a small sample drawn off a vein.
How it goes:
Soreness afterward is normal and so is a small bruise. Both fade inside a day or two.
Prepare faultlessly and a handful of things still move your numbers. Knowing which ones is what lets you and your doctor read the report for what it actually is.
