Blood sugar testing plays an important role when it comes to the management of diabetes. Although fasting and postprandial sugars provide great snapshots, they can only depict glucose levels at a given time. The HbA1c test, however, gives a larger scale. That is why physicians are fond of referring to it as the gold standard to measure long-term blood sugar measures.
HbA1c test (also known as glycated haemoglobin test) measures average level of sugar in blood in the last 2-3 months. It does this by examining levels of glucose that are connected to haemoglobin, or protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen.
Because red blood cells have an average life span of 120 days, HbA1c is a good indicator of your overall sugar history instead of providing isolated data points.
If the level of HbA1c is noticeably high at all times, then your physician may change the course of treatment of your diabetes condition.
HbA1c test is also used in preventive care. As pointed out in Why is a Regular Health Checkup Important? Routine check-ups detect an imbalance early enough before it develops into a chronic condition. And in case you would like to have some practical lifestyle modifications, you may refer to our article on 5 Simple Steps to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes and Boost Your Health.
The HbA1c test is the most reliable way to monitor long-term blood sugar control. Unlike single readings, it gives doctors and patients a clearer understanding of how well diabetes is managed over time.
If you’re diabetic or at risk, ask your doctor about an HbA1c test at least twice a year. It could be the key to preventing complications and living a healthier life.
